The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
