The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
