An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential threats posed by Chinese vehicles, while staff have been advised to avoid discussing secret matters in any cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Background
The revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to disable buses and cause disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
This broader defence situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of official operations, including vehicle usage to communication practices.
