Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
