European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
