Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
